The Am I Normal Guide To... Nailing Your First Date with Fred Sirieix from First Dates

Dating can be tough... What do I wear? How do I behave? What if they find out that I'm actually just a weirdo who spends my evenings watching cute animal clips on YouTube whilst dipping chips into pints of milkshake?!

It can be a daunting experience, particularly if you're meeting up with someone for the first time; however, with a little bit of preparation and a few simple tips, you'll be a courting connoisseur in no time - and who better to help you prep than First Dates maître d' and luuuurve expert Fred Sirieix? Here, we have compiled some of the best advice that Fred has offered up, on the subject of dealing with those first date feelings of dread.

1)

Have Confidence In Yourself

For many people this might seem easier said than done, but Fred believes that it is possible to condition yourself into developing self-confidence - fake it until you make it! If you rock up to a date with your head held up high, you'll instantly feel better in yourself... and it'll show!

2)

Wear Whatever Makes You Feel Comfortable

You've probably read countless advice on what to wear on a first date - how much make-up should you wear? Heels or no heels? Jeans or trousers? Fred says the main point is that you should wear whatever makes you feel good in yourself (although your stained Hello Kitty onesie might not be the best choice). Ultimately, you're looking for someone who likes you for you, not for what you're wearing.

3)

Don't Be Scared Of An Awkward Silence

You might be dreading those uncomfortable first date silences, but don't worry, they're not the end of the world! Nerves are completely normal - keep in mind that you're both in the same boat. Relaaax, says Fred; maybe you could pre-empt those moments by having some questions prepared in advance? Asking about things that could open up an interesting conversation are always a great idea, such as "what things make you laugh?" or, if you're feeling brave "tell me a secret that no one else knows about you?"

4)

Go With The Flow

At the end of the day, there are no hard and fast rules to how you should behave on a first date; you may have an image in your mind of how the date will pan out but don't forget, your date may not have the same vision as you! Don't force anything to happen - According to Fred, you should simply let things come naturally.

5)

Be Aware Of What Your Body Language Says

It's not all about conversation - your movements communicate a lot too! Folded arms and a lack of eye contact may make you appear a little too couldn't-care-less, whilst open body language and a clear interest in what your date has to say will make you look warm, friendly... and interested! Fred suggests a spark in your eye and a great smile will never go amiss.

6)

Lose The Phone!

There might be nothing worse than going on a date, only to find that they spend time in your company constantly texting/Tweeting/Instagramming, and it's not a good idea for you to do this either! Fred says you should put your phone away and not to touch it until you've left. This time is for you and your date and time spent on your phone simply sends across the message that you're not particularly into them.

7)

Remember That There Are No Bad Dates, Just Good Stories!

With this in mind, you will be able to enjoy every aspect of your first date - even the slightly embarrassing moments! Fred points out that "dating is fun, it's exciting, and you're going to share a good time with somebody that possibly could be 'The One' so just enjoy it and go with the ride." Wise words, Fred. Wise words.
